2019 River Road Ranch Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley

The 2019 growing season was nearly ideal. Sonoma County experienced a few late rains in the month of May followed by a series of warm days that provided full flavor development and fruit maturity in all varieties. The crop load was perfect and the mild fall weather patterns ripened the fruit to perfection.

Winemaking

Traditional techniques using open top fermenters and manual punch downs were implemented. To accentuate the fruit component, twenty percent of the grapes were added whole cluster to the wine during fermentation. The components are a selection of clones from our Russian River Ranch. We chose 777, 667, 114, 115 and UCD37. Each clone brings to the blend its own distinct characteristics. The 777 clone adds pronounced Pinot Noir aroma, good color and a very silky texture, 667 is bright and aromatic, 114 is super fruity, 115 lends good color and acid, and UCD37 is bold and full bodied.

Tasting Notes

A classic Russian River Pinot Noir with heady, dark medieval forest floor earthiness and a bright cherry cola fruit characteristic. The wine is beautifully balanced – rich, full bodied with a great depth and length of finish. This wine screams Russian River Valley but reminds us of its Burgundian heritage.
