A Complete Vertical of three
Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon’s
Block 21 has been a coveted vineyard block since the inception of the family’s vineyard company.
A vineyard block is determined by the micro-climate. It can be a few rows, a hillside, an acre, or an even larger area. The crew determines which grapes are going through the entire growth cycle on the same time frame. The cycle is: budbreak, flower cluster initiation, flowering, fruit set, berry development, harvest, and dormancy. The way the sun hits an area and for how long plays a role as well. These factors help determine the various blocks, so the crew can effectively map the vineyards and plan their season.
This helps our winemaking team by giving them blocks of fruit to work with that have more concentrated flavor profiles. This is a benefit when working with wines that are blended because each block can lend a different component to the wine, creating a nice, balanced composition.
Here at Trione, we use one single block to make our Cabernet Sauvignon. Block 21 is at our Cloverdale property in Alexander Valley. It’s consistently a much warmer climate. The grapes in this block see budbreak all at once, go through veraison at the same time and ripen evenly through the entire block. This is one of the reasons our Cabernet Sauvignon is so robust and concentrated. It’s also the reason it shows so beautifully after being cellared for years.
