Harvest has finally arrived.
In the stunning landscapes of California wine country, where the sun-kissed grapes hold the promise of exceptional wines, this year's harvest in Northern Sonoma County has nothing short of thrilling! The 2023 growing season has been a test of patience, perseverance, and the triumphant spirit of our viticulture & winemaking teams as they accept the unpredictability of nature’s timeline.
A Slow Start
The journey from bud break to veraison was a bit like a suspenseful story that kept us all on the edge of our seats. Spring was cool and cloudy leading to a delayed and drawn-out bloom throughout the region. Even as the vines set fruit, the weather was unchanged, and the vineyards continued to develop at a slow and steady pace.
Patience was key as most vineyard blocks were three to four weeks behind their typical pick dates. The vines seemed to march to their own beat, and we couldn't be sure what was going to unfold. The wait was well worth it as the resulting wines all showcase their natural acidity in perfect balance with fresh fruit flavors and aromas. Seasons like 2023 without large weather fluctuations lend themselves to truly elegant wines.
Introducing Winemaker John Duckett
This year's harvest holds a special place in our hearts as it marks the beginning of a new era. John Duckett, who joined Trione in January, will be overseeing his first harvest as our head winemaker. His nuanced approach, eye for quality, and passion align with the values of the Trione family and support his goal of continuing the brand’s legacy of producing premium Sonoma County wines
The Blessing of the Grapes
The first fruit received were Pinot Noir grapes from our River Road Ranch in Russian River Valley. In a longstanding harvest tradition, John blessed the grapes, celebrating the bounty of nature’s gift from the land, honoring the crews working tirelessly to deliver fruit, and making a promise of incredible wines in the making.
